Whether you’re a newbie or have been doing it for years, coming up with blog topics can be hard! These are my tried and tested methods of coming up with blog topics for both myself and my clients. If you’re feeling stuck for inspiration, try out one of these tips!
Mine Your Blog
If you already have a blog, go through past posts for inspiration. What performed well? What did you mention briefly that you could dive into further? What topics could use an update? Use your current posts as a jumping-off point for new material to save yourself some time and get the most our of your creative efforts.
Study the Competition
What are your high-ranking competitors blogging about? This isn’t an invitation to copy someone else’s work. But it can be a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Often someone else may have blogged about a topic that would never have occurred to you. Seeing their ideas can inspire you with other ways you could add value for your clients through your blog.
Look at the Calendar
Just looking over the year can spark ideas. If you provide seasonal services, like senior photos or holiday minis, you’ll want to start blogging about those in advance so that people have time to plan and book you. Even seasons without a major holiday can be a great fit for certain topics if you get creative. Maybe March puts you in mind of spring cleaning. Could you write about how to organize a digital photo library? Or give tips for what to do with old family photos once clients invest in new portraits?
Keyword Research
Use a free tool to check out some of the keywords in your industry. What types of blog posts could you write that would easily incorporate high-ranking keywords? You should never craft your blog post entirely around keywords, but search terms can help you come up with ideas and learn more about what your ideal client is searching for.
FAQs
Maybe you have a FAQs page, or maybe you just know the kinds of questions clients often call or email you about. Either way, these can provide a great jumping off point for informative blog posts that address questions you know your readers are asking. FAQs are basically blog posts just waiting to be typed up and published!
Brainstorm
Two heads are better than one! Grab a friend and spend half an hour throwing ideas back and forth. Write down every idea. Even if you end up tossing it later, it may spark other thoughts. If you need a buddy, give me a call! I’d be happy to set up a brainstorming session with you.
Focus on Your Readers
Any idea you decide to go with should provide value to your readers. Your blog only serves your business if it serves your clients! Put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client and ask yourself, “What do I want to know? What content would be helpful to me or help me feel seen and heard? What am I interested in?”
I hope these ideas help you to keep your blog fresh with new and relevant material. Remember, if you ever need ideas or start to feel blogging burnout catching up with you, get in touch. Taking care of blogs and bloggers is what I do! Together we can come up with a plan that simplifies blogging and makes your life easier.
